This book is incredibly intense. You may be enraged, shocked, moved, or even cry. I'm completely bewildered. I'm wondering if this is really how children in Afghanistan live. They seem to be forced to mature before their time. Trully sad.
Summary from Publisher:
Afghanistan, 1975: Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the local kite-fighting tournament and his loyal friend Hassan promises to help him.But neither of the boys can foresee what will happen to Hassan that afternoon, an event that is to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return to Afghanistan under Taliban rule to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption.
The main characters, Amir and Hassan, have a very strong bond. Even when Amir betrayed Hassan, the bond brought him back. The author describes this part very well. Every setting has an important aspect associated with it. That's how good this book is.
The storyline is unpredictable. The plot twists caught me off guard several times. This book is intense but not tedious. I regret allowing this book to continue to be pushed to the bottom of my TBR. To be honest, the story's setting initially intimidated me. Thank God, I changed my mind and picked up this book.
"For you, a thousand times over."
"Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors."
"There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood."
"He knew I'd seen everything in that alley, that I'd stood there and done nothing. He knew that I'd betrayed him and yet he was rescuing me once again, maybe for the last time. "
